Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: welcome to this week’s swarth and chips today we’re in sunny grimsby at the home of bacon engineering a company that’s been established for 123 years and we are with the fifth generation of the business david bacon and darren glue and we’re going to have a fantastic machine shop tour [Music] thanks for having us today at your fantastic facility i’m really looking forward to have a walk around and learn a little bit more about what you do but before we start and we have the talk can you just firstly tell us a little bit more about the history of the company and the heritage how you started so we’re 123 years old we started in the troll industry fishing we now have moved into renewables we do work with the cabin capture and storage facilities and we offer drone services so from a very very um traditional industry we’re moving to you know the renewables in the modern sector what about some of the components that you manufacture i see that you’ve got a selection behind you there can you explain some of the parts that you make i’ll try there’s a wide range so what you can see here are a number of different components we go from bracketry through two pins um we have axle for a miniature railway we’ve got uh hinges for security door systems uh we’ve got some bearing covers what are the largest components that you can make so anything on the new lathe we can do up to a five meter length uh and on the borax we can do up to a 1.2 diameter um facing so darren you’ve got three uh milling machines here one being the the lr and why have you chosen xyz they’ve been a very reliable and and um consistently supportive partner and they’ve helped us from a point of view of both service and keeping the machines up and running but also keeping us abreast of any new technology that’s coming out into the market right i mean there’s there’s another another smx 5000 that’s being set here do you know what components being made here so at the moment these the guys working on a particular plate for one of our customers and that will be used in one of their manufacturing processes on one of their machines so this is the milling department and we’re going to be touching on fabrication later on in in this show but we’ve also got a turning department around the corner here can you can you take us through please and and show us what kind of parts that you’re making yeah this is these are actually parts that go with some of the bracketry that we’ve seen on the uh the bench area um so these are part of a security door system that we provide for one of our customers what do you think of the xyz lathes that you’re using um at bacon yeah i really like them the sort of a bridge between a full cnc job and like a manual sort of for one off or two off like we do now i think they really are ideal thank you very much so we’ve got got a nice little uh turning department here darren um and this looks like there’s a lot of work going through um that section there now moving on here we’ve got an absolute beast a beast of a lathe so is this one of the latest investments yes it is yeah this is our uh our latest investment in uh really what is cutting edge technology from a turning perspective this lathe is fairly unique and bespoke to us it gives us the opportunity to turn up to five meters in length which is fairly substantial in the uh in the sector um and also from a diameter point of view we’re talking about upwards of a meter in diameter of the um capacity of the machine so what type of components would you look to machine on this type of lathe so we’ll predominantly be as you see now a roller or a shaft and for a whole different wide range of sectors um from full manufacturing right through to with this particular element it’s going off to a chemical processing plant really now i’m going to try and grab the operator i can see he’s been programming on the machine john i met you earlier um looks like a fabulous machine how how i see your programming how have you been finding the programming it’s really really easy it’s conversational you get sort of 3d simulations of everything so it’s really really easy and intuitive to program so it took us no time at all to pick it up and how are you finding the machine tool in general you’re doing some very large parts on it you know how is it coping with some of the larger parts yeah great we’re really happy with it it’s really powerful machine and it’s done everything we’ve asked of it so far and this is the excel 730 i believe it is yeah xl 730 by 5 meters so xyz how have they supported you on this project really really helpful they came in did a training on site so specific to the machine answered all the questions um yeah we was up and running yeah pretty quickly once it was commissioned now parts such as this you were making them before how were you making them before uh on an old manual lathe which has been in the company since 1965 so we certainly our money’s worth out of that so it’s time to invest in something new that was you know give a bit more flexibility make more complex components and the beauty of this machine we can use it on big stuff and really small stuff just as easily and how has it transformed the business since introducing this large cnc live to the business uh well it’s it’s taken away the um the need to have somebody that you know save the time on manual machine old-school trip tips and tricks doing uh manual stuff um you know that the lads who use the smaller prototype stuff and come on here and just as easily make something you know as big without fear of you know tapers and things like that you get on manual machines and what about the accuracy and repeatability how has that benefited you now it’s great you put a cut on and you can trust the machine if you you put a two mil cut on you know it’s gonna take two mil and it’ll do the same next time and the time after and you you’re not constantly checking and it saves you lots of time you can trust the machine to actually do what what it’s saying it’s doing and is it got the talk and the power for the harder materials yeah we’re yet to put a cut on that it won’t take uh yeah really rips the material off good cheer thank you very much uh john now so that i mean it sounds like it’s a success already darren absolutely it gives us so much flexibility and offers such a wide range of components that we can now machine and you know despite its length we you know we can manufacture some very small components obviously it’s more effective use of the machine if we’re manufacturing something as you see now but yeah it’s brilliant for the business we’ve got some old manual machines so i’m sure this is in touch with you know your heritage and and your tradition and and i’m sure our colin griffiths um would remember some of these is of that kind of uh age um but talk us through some of this old machinery and why you’ve still got it on site so we we affectionately refer to this whole area as our heritage corner now what you’re looking at at the moment is the lombardo and now this uh this layer this is critical to the business you can see we’ve got a component on there now it’s simply not possible for us to um machine that particular component any on on any other piece of kit a very large swing diameter on the lombardo i’ve never heard of a lombardo machine before but it does sound italian so i should know about it now we’ve got a horizontal horizontal boring machine here and it still seems like it’s in in use um what what what parts are you making on it so these parts are some um rings that are going into a chemical processing plant again um well they form part of a steam ring um so it’s about the way in which um materials are flowing through uh uh chemical uh fluid perfect now last machine here a pillar drill um does this still get used yes it does yes it does we’ve got a six foot reach on it so not used very often but being able to buy something with that reach now is nine impossible so very useful to us you’ve got lots of capabilities in your machining department i think it’s time to go over to the fabrication department now david i’ve just had a tour of the machining department and now we’re in the fabrication department why why do you offer both capabilities why is it so important to you guys at bacon engineering to do so historically we always had a single welder fabricator uh but it became apparent there’s more and more work available so we had an opportunity to build that and um and and and since we took that opportunity it’s gone from center center and we’ve now got two equivalent size departments um which gives us a real broad solution and is a real strength of ours lots of noise going on in here lots of sparks being created let’s take a walk through i’ve been noticing a lot of these drill type components on the floor what what are these and what are you doing to them david so these are augers um they’re from the construction industry uh from a big big customer of ours effectively they bring them to us they’ve worn down they’ve got imperfections and we sort of straighten them out and do a lot of hard facing and repair work so steady flow with those keep it keep really keeps us busy but basically big big screws big drills pieces for you know to drill out uh you know down for building projects we’ve got some sparks going on here what’s the guy producing here david so this is not the way we normally want to do a job uh but due to the timelines we’ve got we’re having to hand cut out this um the the 20 mil sheet uh in order to basically we’re reverse engineering a a part four for one of our big customers we’ve not got the time to draw and get laser profiles cut so we’re doing it a bit old school but again it shows the sort of the the breadth of what we can do um when when we really need to react for a customer and you’re not just welding and fabricating you’re kind of using the machining capabilities um as well aren’t you um to make parts that are using both kind of technology absolutely i mean that’s a perfect job that this in front of us there that’s going to be probably sort of 70 fabrication but we need to machine various components to go into that so again it just gives it having both departments you know that both services under under one under one sort of on one side is a real strength of ours latest innovations at bacon engineering you’ve got the machining section you’ve got the fabrication section but you’re also being involved with new innovations such as drones can you tell our audience a little bit about this side of the business well it’s something we see is a really exciting development for the business so uh the whole sort of concept is we can do drone surveys of whether it’s high structures both onshore or offshore you know particularly with opportunity within within renewables and wind turbines but not only can we survey and provide 3d modelling or sort of complex sort of diagrams etc we can then provide an engineering solution to to help fix or build whatever structures are required whether it’s metal access works or we can and part of that we can also do laser scanning of components which we can feed straight into our cnc lathes to replicate so it’s a really exciting um new sort of step that we’re taking and one that we think there’s a lot of a lot of potential value in so what are your expectations for the for the future david well i think as diamonds probably mentioned there’s a lot of exciting um developments within our region from the renewables to carbon capture projects um to freeport status for the humber and development of the docks within the area for for imports exports so there’s a lot happening regionally and we see there’s there’s huge opportunities for someone like ourselves to be key parts of that supply chain so how important is it for you guys to offer an all-in-one solution to your clients does this win you more business it’s an essential part of the offering that we that we have uh you know it’s we’re a one-stop shop for a really broad spectrum of of engineering solutions and we think that makes us quite unique and uh and is a real strength of ours you know for for both you know within our town and region so and it’s something we want to to to develop as well as far as the breadth of the offering so it’s i think it’s just the start of that journey it’s an exciting time for the business .

0.24 a little bit more about what you do but
0.24 before we start and we have the talk can
0.24 you just firstly tell us a little bit
0.24 more about the history of the company
0.24 and the heritage how you started so
0.24 we&;re 123 years old we started in the
0.24 troll industry fishing we now have moved
0.24 into renewables
0.24 we do work with the
0.24 cabin capture and storage facilities and
0.24 we offer drone services so from a very
0.24 very um traditional industry we&;re
0.24 moving to you know the renewables in the
0.24 modern sector what about some of the
0.24 components that you manufacture i see
0.24 that you&;ve got a selection behind you
0.24 there can you explain some of the parts
0.24 that you make i&;ll try there&;s a wide
0.24 range so what you can see here are a
0.24 number of different components we go
0.24 from bracketry through two pins um we
0.24 have axle for a
0.24 miniature railway we&;ve got uh hinges
0.24 for security door systems uh we&;ve got
0.24 some bearing covers what are the largest
0.24 components that you can make so anything
0.24 on the new lathe we can do up to a five
0.24 meter length uh and on the borax we can
0.24 do up to a 1.2 diameter um facing so
0.24 darren you&;ve got three uh milling
0.24 machines here one being the the lr and
0.24 why have you chosen xyz they&;ve been a
0.24 very reliable and and um consistently
0.24 supportive partner and they&;ve helped us
0.24 from a point of view of both service and
0.24 keeping the machines up and running but
0.24 also keeping us abreast of any new
0.24 technology that&;s coming out into the
0.24 market
0.24 right i mean there&;s there&;s another
0.24 another smx 5000 that&;s being set here
0.24 do you know what components being made
0.24 here so at the moment these the guys
0.24 working on a particular plate for one of
0.24 our customers
0.24 and that will be used in one of their
0.24 manufacturing processes on one of their
0.24 machines
0.24 so this is the milling department and
0.24 we&;re going to be touching on
0.24 fabrication later on in in this show but
0.24 we&;ve also got a turning department
0.24 around the corner here can you can you
0.24 take us through please and and show us
0.24 what kind of parts that you&;re making
0.24 yeah this is these are actually parts
0.24 that go with some of the bracketry that
0.24 we&;ve seen on the uh the bench area um
0.24 so these are part of a security door
0.24 system that we provide for one of our
0.24 customers what do you think of the xyz
0.24 lathes that you&;re using um at bacon
0.24 yeah i really like them the
0.24 sort of a bridge between a full cnc job
0.24 and like a manual sort of for one off or
0.24 two off like we do now i think they
0.24 really are ideal
0.24 thank you very much
0.24 so we&;ve got got a nice little uh
0.24 turning department here darren um and
0.24 this looks like there&;s a lot of work
0.24 going through um that section there now
0.24 moving on here we&;ve got an absolute
0.24 beast
0.24 a beast of a lathe so is this one of the
0.24 latest investments yes it is yeah this
0.24 is our uh our latest investment in uh
0.24 really what is cutting edge technology
0.24 from a turning perspective this lathe is
0.24 fairly unique and bespoke to us it gives
0.24 us the opportunity to
0.24 turn up to five meters in length which
0.24 is fairly substantial in the uh in the
0.24 sector um and also from a diameter point
0.24 of view we&;re talking about upwards of a
0.24 meter in diameter of the um capacity of
0.24 the machine so what type of components
0.24 would you look to machine on this type
0.24 of lathe so we&;ll predominantly be as
0.24 you see now a roller or a shaft and for
0.24 a whole different wide range of sectors
0.24 um from full manufacturing right through
0.24 to
0.24 with this particular element it&;s going
0.24 off to a chemical processing plant
0.24 really now i&;m going to try and grab the
0.24 operator i can see he&;s been programming
0.24 on the machine
0.24 john i met you earlier um looks like a
0.24 fabulous machine how how i see your
0.24 programming how have you been finding
0.24 the programming it&;s really really easy
0.24 it&;s conversational you get sort of 3d
0.24 simulations of everything so it&;s really
0.24 really easy
0.24 and intuitive to program so it took us
0.24 no time at all to pick it up and how are
0.24 you finding the machine tool in general
0.24 you&;re doing some very large parts on it
0.24 you know how is it coping with some of
0.24 the larger parts yeah great we&;re really
0.24 happy with it it&;s really powerful
0.24 machine and it&;s done everything we&;ve
0.24 asked of it so far and this is the excel
0.24 730 i believe it is yeah xl 730 by 5
0.24 meters so xyz how have they supported
0.24 you on this project
0.24 really really helpful they came in did a
0.24 training on site so specific to the
0.24 machine
0.24 answered all the questions um yeah we
0.24 was up and running yeah pretty quickly
0.24 once it was commissioned now parts such
0.24 as this you were making them before how
0.24 were you making them before uh on an old
0.24 manual lathe which has been in the
0.24 company since 1965 so we certainly our
0.24 money&;s worth out of that
0.24 so it&;s time to invest in something new
0.24 that was you know give a bit more
0.24 flexibility
0.24 make more complex components and the
0.24 beauty of this machine we can use it on
0.24 big stuff and really small stuff just as
0.24 easily and how has it transformed the
0.24 business since introducing this large
0.24 cnc live to the business uh well it&;s
0.24 it&;s taken away the
0.24 um the need to have somebody that you
0.24 know save the time on manual machine
0.24 old-school trip tips and tricks doing uh
0.24 manual stuff um you know that the lads
0.24 who use the smaller prototype stuff and
0.24 come on here and just as easily make
0.24 something you know as big without fear
0.24 of you know
0.24 tapers and things like that you get on
0.24 manual machines and what about the
0.24 accuracy and repeatability how has that
0.24 benefited you now it&;s great you put a
0.24 cut on and you can trust the machine if
0.24 you you put a two mil cut on you know
0.24 it&;s gonna take two mil and it&;ll do the
0.24 same next time and the time after and
0.24 you you&;re not constantly checking and
0.24 it saves you lots of time you can trust
0.24 the machine to actually do what what
0.24 it&;s saying it&;s doing and is it got the
0.24 talk and the power for the harder
0.24 materials yeah we&;re yet to put a cut on
0.24 that it won&;t take uh yeah really rips
0.24 the material off good cheer thank you
0.24 very much uh john now so that i mean it
0.24 sounds like it&;s a success already
0.24 darren absolutely it gives us so much
0.24 flexibility and offers such a wide range
0.24 of components that we can now machine
0.24 and you know despite its length we you
0.24 know we can manufacture some very small
0.24 components obviously it&;s more effective
0.24 use of the machine if we&;re
0.24 manufacturing something as you see now
0.24 but yeah it&;s brilliant for the business
0.24 we&;ve got some old manual machines so
0.24 i&;m sure this is in touch with you know
0.24 your heritage and and your tradition and
0.24 and i&;m sure our colin griffiths um
0.24 would remember some of these is of that
0.24 kind of uh age um but talk us through
0.24 some of this old machinery and why
0.24 you&;ve still got it on site so we we
0.24 affectionately refer to this whole area
0.24 as our heritage corner now what you&;re
0.24 looking at at the moment is the lombardo
0.24 and now this uh this layer this is
0.24 critical to the business you can see
0.24 we&;ve got a component on there now it&;s
0.24 simply not possible for us to um machine
0.24 that particular component any on on any
0.24 other piece of kit a very large swing
0.24 diameter on the lombardo i&;ve never
0.24 heard of a lombardo machine before but
0.24 it does sound italian so i should know
0.24 about it now we&;ve got a horizontal
0.24 horizontal boring machine here and it
0.24 still seems like it&;s in in use um what
0.24 what what parts are you making on it so
0.24 these parts are some um rings that are
0.24 going into a
0.24 chemical processing plant again um well
0.24 they form part of a steam ring um so
0.24 it&;s about the way in which um materials
0.24 are flowing through uh uh
0.24 chemical uh
0.24 fluid
0.24 perfect now last machine here a pillar
0.24 drill um does this still get used yes it
0.24 does yes it does we&;ve got a six foot
0.24 reach on it
0.24 so not used very often but
0.24 being able to buy something with that
0.24 reach now is nine impossible so very
0.24 useful to us you&;ve got lots of
0.24 capabilities in your machining
0.24 department i think it&;s time to go over
0.24 to the fabrication department now david
0.24 i&;ve just had a tour of the machining
0.24 department and
0.24 now we&;re in the fabrication department
0.24 why why do you offer both capabilities
0.24 why is it so important to you guys at
0.24 bacon engineering to do so historically
0.24 we always had a single welder fabricator
0.24 uh but it became apparent there&;s more
0.24 and more work available
0.24 so we had an opportunity to build that
0.24 and um and and and since we took that
0.24 opportunity it&;s gone from center center
0.24 and we&;ve now got two equivalent size
0.24 departments um which gives us a real
0.24 broad solution and is a real strength of
0.24 ours
0.24 lots of noise going on in here lots of
0.24 sparks being created let&;s take a walk
0.24 through i&;ve been noticing a lot of
0.24 these drill type components on the floor
0.24 what what are these and what are you
0.24 doing to them david so these are augers
0.24 um they&;re from the construction
0.24 industry uh from a big big customer of
0.24 ours
0.24 effectively they bring them to us
0.24 they&;ve worn down they&;ve got
0.24 imperfections and we sort of straighten
0.24 them out and do a lot of hard facing and
0.24 repair work so steady flow with those
0.24 keep it keep really keeps us busy but
0.24 basically big big screws big drills
0.24 pieces for you know to drill out uh you
0.24 know down for building projects we&;ve
0.24 got some sparks going on here what&;s the
0.24 guy producing here david so this is not
0.24 the way we normally want to do a job uh
0.24 but due to the timelines we&;ve got we&;re
0.24 having to hand cut out this um the the
0.24 20 mil sheet uh in order to basically
0.24 we&;re reverse engineering a a
0.24 part four for one of our big customers
0.24 we&;ve not got the time to draw and get
0.24 laser profiles cut so we&;re doing it a
0.24 bit old school but again it shows the
0.24 sort of the the breadth of what we can
0.24 do um when
0.24 when we really need to react for a
0.24 customer and you&;re not just welding and
0.24 fabricating you&;re kind of using the
0.24 machining capabilities um as well aren&;t
0.24 you um to make parts that are using both
0.24 kind of technology
0.24 absolutely i mean that&;s a perfect job
0.24 that this in front of us there that&;s
0.24 going to be
0.24 probably sort of 70 fabrication but we
0.24 need to machine various components to go
0.24 into that
0.24 so again it just gives it having both
0.24 departments you know that both services
0.24 under under one under one sort of on one
0.24 side is a real strength of ours latest
0.24 innovations at bacon engineering you&;ve
0.24 got the machining section you&;ve got the
0.24 fabrication section but you&;re also
0.24 being involved with new innovations such
0.24 as drones can you tell our audience a
0.24 little bit about this side of the
0.24 business well it&;s something we see is a
0.24 really exciting development for the
0.24 business so uh the whole sort of concept
0.24 is we can do drone surveys of whether
0.24 it&;s high structures both onshore or
0.24 offshore you know particularly with
0.24 opportunity within within renewables and
0.24 wind turbines
0.24 but not only can we survey and provide
0.24 3d modelling or sort of
0.24 complex sort of
0.24 diagrams etc we can then provide an
0.24 engineering solution to to help fix or
0.24 build whatever structures are required
0.24 whether it&;s metal access works or we
0.24 can and part of that we can also do
0.24 laser scanning of components which we
0.24 can feed straight into our cnc lathes
0.24 to replicate so it&;s a really exciting
0.24 um new sort of step that we&;re taking
0.24 and one that we think there&;s a lot of a
0.24 lot of potential value in so what are
0.24 your expectations for the for the future
0.24 david well i think as diamonds probably
0.24 mentioned there&;s a lot of exciting
0.24 um developments within our region from
0.24 the renewables to carbon capture
0.24 projects
0.24 um to freeport status for the humber
0.24 and development of the docks within the
0.24 area for for imports exports so there&;s
0.24 a lot happening regionally and we see
0.24 there&;s there&;s huge opportunities for
0.24 someone like ourselves to be key parts
0.24 of that supply chain so how important is
0.24 it for you guys to offer an all-in-one
0.24 solution
0.24 to your clients does this win you more
0.24 business
0.24 it&;s an essential part of the offering
0.24 that we that we have uh you know it&;s
0.24 we&;re a one-stop shop for a really broad
0.24 spectrum of of engineering solutions and
0.24 we think that makes us quite unique and
0.24 uh and is a real strength of ours you
0.24 know for for both you know within our
0.24 town and region so
0.24 and it&;s something we want to to to
0.24 develop as well as far as the breadth of
0.24 the offering so it&;s i think it&;s just
0.24 the start of that journey it&;s an
0.24 exciting time for the business
